A Kool deck is a type of soft but durable deck that surrounds swimming pools. It is water and temperature resistant, so it protects the area around the pool from becoming damaged as a result of excess water exposure, and it also prevents you from burning your hands and feet when stepping out of the pool on a hot day. Although the Kool deck is a trademarked name, other similar names are generically referred to as cool decks. Clean yours regularly to keep it looking like new.
Move all objects away from the Kool deck before you begin cleaning. These would include pool toys, pool cleaning supplies and sandals. If the Kool deck is wet as a result of a recent swim, wait until the deck dries for easiest cleaning.
Sweep your entire Kool deck with a broom. Walk the entire perimeter of the pool and sweep away from the pool, to avoid tracking dirt, dust and debris into the water. A Kool deck is highly porous, so you will need to apply some force to thoroughly draw out the dust and dirt.
Pressure wash your Kool deck. Fill the washer with standard pressure washing detergent and spray the entire Kool deck using a 15- to 25-degree spray tip pointed downward at a 90-degree angle. You can rent a pressure washer from certain home supply stores if you do not own one.
Spot treat your deck with bleach. If you just want to clean certain spots or stains, or if the pressure washer fails to remove certain stains, mix 9 parts water and 1 part chlorine bleach. Pour it over the stains and let it penetrate for 20 minutes.
Scrub the bleached stains on your Kool deck with a firm scrubbing brush. This will further loosen the stains and help you to restore the original shine to your Kool deck surface. Rinse the bleach with water and allow your Kool deck to air dry.
